HSN codes for steel
The 4- and 6-digit HSN code for every material we supply, and the thickness and width rules that decide which one applies. GST on all of them is 18%.
Three rules that decide the code
- 1How many digits your invoice needs
- Turnover up to ₹5 crore in the last financial year: 4 digits on B2B invoices. Above ₹5 crore: 6 digits on every invoice.
- 2Width: 600 mm is the line
- Flat steel 600 mm wide or more is 7208, 7209 or 7210. Slit coil and strip under 600 mm wide moves to 7211 or 7212.
- 3Coil or cut, and thickness
- The same steel takes a different 6-digit code as a coil or as cut sheets, and again by thickness band.
Slit coils and strips under 600 mm wide
Once a coil is slit narrower than 600 mm, it is billed under the narrow-strip headings instead.

If you send us your own coil to slit or cut, that is job work — a service billed under a SAC code, not an HSN code.
- The first 6 digits are the same in India's Customs Tariff and worldwide. The full 8-digit code is needed for imports and exports, not on a GST invoice.
- Codes as of October 2026. For your own invoices and returns, confirm with your CA.
